Greig Memorial Library's Summer Reading program starts June 6th and runs through July 11th, with Storytime and Make & Take Crafts at 6 pm on Tuesdays on the library lawn. In inclement weather, we will move into the Children's Room. Find Your Voice! allows us to learn our voices have power. We use our voices to share stories, express ourselves, and spark change. Our voices include not only the sounds we make, but the words we write, the art we create, the movements we perform, and the actions we take each day to impact our world. Join us as we explore the arts and more to find our voices. Check elementary school take home folders in the last full week of school for registration forms, or pick one up at the library after May 19th to register. Check our GML facebook page or the summer reading tab of the website for more details.

Friends of GML hosted our Annual Children's Christmas Party on December 7th. Our young patrons and their families enjoyed making crafts and eating sweet treats. Our chosen book/theme was Gingerbread Mouse. If you visited the library over the holiday season, you may have seen little mice cavorting amongst our Christmas decorations, just like the mouse in our story. Congratulations to our gift basket winners! Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and talents to make the evening a success. Thank you also to everyone who donated the tasty cookies and treats we enjoyed during our story. And, a big thank you to Santa and Mrs. Claus for reading our story and answering all kinds of questions! Check out our Facebook page for photos of the event and our sweet, tasty holiday decorations. And, don't forget to check out pictures from our Gingerbread Mouse Christmas Open House, held December 17th. We had 20+ community members come out to see our decorated library and enjoy wonderful conversations. We love being a part of our community! We hope everyone will have a happy, healthy, prosperous 2023! Keep Reading!

Halloween at the library was a huge success this year, despite the drizzle and wind! The library yard was decorated with vignettes from Alice in Wonderland, and our volunteer helpers were dressed as Alice, the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts, and several playing cards. We loved seeing all your colorful, inventive costumes! We handed out 110 books, 110 treat bags, and 110 cookies in an hour and a half! That's our biggest number in the shortest amount of time since we started Halloween at the library! Thank you to everyone who came out to trick or treat, and a big thanks to our Friends' volunteers. We love being a part of this community!

Friends of GML would like to announce that Greig Memorial Library has been awarded the Pilcrow Foundation's Children's Book Project Grant! We have received 116 new hardcover books spanning ages from pre-K to young adult. These books include 18 Health & Wellness books and 23 Math & Science books, in addition to the 75 books we ordered through the grant. Friends of GML worked with our librarian, ROWVA teachers and staff, and community members to choose our books. The grant requires a financial commitment of 1/3 of the cost of the 70+ books we ordered in order to build community investment in children's literacy and the library's future. We worked hard to weed our children's collection to make room for the new books and get them processed and into the system so they are ready to be checked out. There will be a celebration Open House event on Saturday, August 6th, during library hours, to premiere the new books. From 11 am - 1 pm on that day, Friends of GML will also be serving free root beer floats to mark the occasion. Please come out, peruse the new books, and enjoy a root beer float on us! UPDATE: Thank you to all who came out for our celebration. Peruse the complete list of new books, appearing on our Newly Acquired Books page for another month or so, and visit the library to check out your new favorites! For more information on the Pilcrow Foundation, visit thepilcrowfoundation.org. And, we are posting videos of some of our new picture books, so stay tuned in and follow our YouTube channel (address listed on our Home page.) Keep Reading!

On Saturday, July 23rd, parents of K-6 Oneida ROWVA students could drive up to the library, list the name and grade of the child, and pick up a bag of free school supplies for their student. Friends of GML organized the event and want to thank the generous sponsors who made it possible for us to purchase all the school supplies: Ameren, Casey's General Store, ROWVA Public School Foundation, and Walmart. We couldn't have done it without them. In case you are an Oneida resident and parent of a K-6 ROWVA student and you missed the pickup day, please stop in the library during open hours in the next week and pick up your bag of supplies. An incomplete ROWVA registration does not prevent you from receiving a bag of supplies. Thank you again to our sponsors who made it possible for us to provide this event to our community!

Read Beyond the Beaten Path participants went to Minions: Rise of Gru on Sunday, July 24th, to celebrate their success in our summer reading program. On Tuesdays from June 21st to July 19th, participants came to the library at 6 pm to hear a outdoor-themed story and complete a fun nature-themed craft to go with the story. The weather allowed us to have two of our five sessions outside on the library lawn. Each week, participants who met their reading goals could put a special outdoor camping badge on their reading log and choose a prize from the treasure chest. At the end of the program, in addition to the opportunity to attend the movie with free admission thanks to the generosity of our Friends of GML, participants received a goody bag and frosty treat. Everyone who attended at least one Tuesday night session had their name put into a drawing for a gift basket. Even though the summer reading program has concluded, the weekly craft supplies from any sessions a participant missed will be at the library for another week. The story videos are posted under a Summer Reading 2022 Playlist on our YouTube Channel, so check them out! Keep Reading!

THANK YOU to all our vendors, volunteers, donors, and shoppers who made our inaugural Love the Library event happen! Our vendors were: Adams Craft Creations, Asplund's Arrangements, Christy's Creations, The Gift Shop, and Sewed Up by Carlee. Our event could not have been organized, promoted, and staffed without the help of our volunteers. We thank everyone who donated baked goods for the Bake Sale, books for the Book Sale, and items for the White Elephant Sale. We also thank everyone who came out and shopped despite the hot weather. All your efforts resulted in more than $600 that will help fund Friends of the Library outreach programs, like summer reading, Fill the Backpack, and holiday themed events at the library. We also had lots of first-time visitors to the library, some resulting in brand new library card holders! Friends of GML would like to extend a big thanks to EVERYONE involved in making Love the Library a success. We are so thankful to be part of our community!

The 4th Annual Children's Christmas at the Library event was held Wednesday, December 1st, 2021 from 6-7:30 pm. Four craft stations gave our youngest patrons the opportunity to make their own Grinch-themed ornaments, door hangers, and bookmarks. Mr. and Mrs. Claus were present to read How the Grinch Stole Christmas! while lots of cookies and cocoa were being enjoyed. Our library is decorated for the season like the inside of one of the Who-Houses in Whoville from the story. And, that night, we were visited by the Grinch himself, who snuck around from room to room looking for ornaments and Christmas decorations to steal.
Everyone had a great time and we thank all the volunteers who made the event so special. We also invite everyone to view pictures of the event on our Facebook page, come to the library to enjoy our Christmas decorations, pick up an activity packet, participate in our coloring contest, and even have refreshments at our Christmas Open House on Saturday, December 18th, from 10 - Noon. And, check out How the Grinch Stole Christmas! story video on our YouTube channel!
Merry Grinchmas!
